What could it be like to be a conservative Somali Muslim girl – a refugee from war and famine thrust into the commercialized, sexualized culture that is modern America? For the educators at Portland’s Hosford Middle School, the Somali refugees presented an immediate crisis with tribal rivalries erupting into hallway fights – the ultimate form of vengeance being the scar from a deep bite to the other girl’s face? And then the idea for the African Girls Basketball Team was born.
